“Family Portrait.”

This paper mural was created to celebrate a family who has been through quite a bit in the past few years. It is a symbol of the way their family looks now: a mother, and her two children, their father showing up in the spots of the children. The steadiness of one child and the wild nature of the other are showcased in their spots. All aspects of their family represented in this piece.

“the Matriarchy.”

Inspired by the regal elegance of Queen Charlotte, this collage showcases a majestic tower of giraffes that represent five mothers spanning three generations. Each giraffe is a symbolic portrait of a real person, embodying the individuality that fascinates me about these creatures. Just as each giraffe in the wild boasts a pattern of spots as unique as human fingerprints, so does each figure in my work possess a distinct story and identity.

“my mind…”

This self-portrait was a turning point for me.
I visited Los Angeles California and saw so much art.
The work I saw encouraged me to think bigger and be freer when it came to creating. So, when I returned home, all of the bottled-up energy and emotions came pouring out. This piece was the result. I went from strictly painting with a limited palette, to painting with colors, words and textures that embodied the present energy.

“Francis’ Lemonade Stand.”

Elizabeth Catlett Mora’s works and themes deeply influenced my creation by inspiring me to channel the power, resilience, and grace of the Black women she portrayed in much of her art. Her ability to artistically communicate overcoming the hurdles of injustice with unwavering dignity resinated with me - reminding me of the timeless wisdom in making lemonade when life hands you lemons. This spirit of beauty and expression is something I sought to infuse into my work.

To honor her legacy and the techniques she pioneered, I chose to work with lino printing - a medium Elizabeth Catlett often employed to powerful effect. This decision allowed me to incorporate her forward-moving energy, taking a stand against adversity while simultaneously celebrating the grace and strength that define her artistic vision.

“Beautiful Peace.”

An explosion of joy on paper.
I was really feeling what I was doing when I made this one, but felt I went too far, then not far enough. It no longer matters. The peace is complete!

Bold, confident lines of happiness weave together this tapestry of color - fingers in the shape of the symbol of peace.

“Earthy.”

Raw, textured works with all of its smudges and mistakes makes this piece feel “human”. Are we human if there are no errors?

This is the warmest, and earthiest piece I currently have in my collection, also the first piece completed without pencil as the foundation.
I prefer pencil, so I doubt I’ll do many more of them without it, but who knows.
